Textbook

Physics (sixth edition) by Cutnell & Johnson.  You only need volume II if you used volume I for PHY 101.  The book is available at the College Bookstore on Maple Street.  We chose this bookstore because of unsatisfactory service at the University Bookstore on campus.

Laboratory

It is highly recommended, and it may also be a requirement for your major, that PHY 152 be taken at the same time. A separate grade will be given for PHY 152 by the lab instructor.

Homework

Problems are assigned for each week to be handed in at 5:00 p.m. (the dates are indicated on the following page) in a drop-box in the main office of the Physics Department (Fronczak 239).  Assignments not handed in on time will not be accepted.  The assigned problems represent a minimum.  You are advised to do additional problems on your own and to consult with the Instructor or the Teaching Assistants in case of difficulty.   All office hours of the instructor and the TAs are intended to help you with the course material and homework assignments.  They are effective for gaining a clearer understanding with less time.

Examinations               1st Exam               Friday, Feb. 27 (5:00 – 7:00 p.m., NSC 201 & 225, check course website)

          2nd Exam              Friday, Apr. 2 (5:00-7:00 p.m., NSC 201 & 225, check course website)

          Final Exam            To be announced

All exams are closed-book.  You can, however, bring one formula sheet (any formulas and constants that you wish to write on it).  No other written or printed materials are allowed.

The only acceptable excuse for missing an exam is sickness at the time of the exam (certified by a doctor) or a major emergency.  The instructor should be informed before the end of the day after the exam (call the Physics Main Office, 645-2017, if necessary).  No make-up exam will be given if the instructor is not notified two days after the scheduled exam.

All exams consist of problems similar in style to those in homework assignments.  Exams will be graded and returned to you, and solutions will be posted.  You may request regrading of your exam within one week after it has been returned to you.  The request should be given to the instructor in person and consists of a written note specifying which problems you wish regraded and why you believe these problems were incorrectly graded.  Only one regrade request is allowed per exam.  Exams that have been tampered with or altered in any way will result in an automatic F for the course.  Graded exams will be photocopied at random.

Grading             The final grade will be computed as follows:

Homework and recitation
15%
1st Exam
25%
2nd Exam
25%
Final Exam
35%
Bonus (Attendance/participation)
5%

An Incomplete can only be requested by students who are at a passing level before the final exam and are unable to finish the course with legitimate reasons.  No request will be accepted after the final exam.

Students with Disabilities

If you have a disability of any kind that would require special accommodations, please contact the Office of Disability Services, 25 Capen Hall, 645-2608, and also inform the instructor (optional) during the first two weeks of class.

Attendance               Attendance will be taken on randomly picked dates for the Bonus points listed under Grading.

                                             HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS

Chapter and problem numbers refer to the textbook by Cutnell & Johnson, 6th edition. Solutions to the homework problems can be found when clicking on the entries in the 1st column in the table. Solutions to the homework set #1 for example, you can find by clicking on Jan 12. The graded HW problems will be indicated in red color.
